How to Get Unstuck as a Man

“How do I get unstuck?”
I hear this question a lot from men.
And there is no shortage of answers out there. The internet is full of articles offering five steps, ten steps, quick frameworks, morning routines, mindset shifts, and strategies for getting your life moving again.
Some of that advice is actually good.
But in my experience, most men get stuck long before they ever fail at the strategy.
They get stuck because they are trying to move too quickly into action without first feeling two things they have not fully allowed themselves to feel.
Before the plan, before the strategy, before the next move, there are two emotional thresholds most men skip:
First, they have not fully felt and accepted the reality of their lives exactly as they are today.
Second, they have not fully felt the deeper yearning for something else.
Those two experiences are not extras. They are precursors.
Without them, the steps to getting unstuck often become another form of avoidance of the deeper truth.
Why So Many Men Stay Stuck
A lot of men want movement without emotional contact.
They want the plan.
They want the map.
They want clarity, tactics, momentum, and progress.
What they do not want to do is slow down long enough to feel the truth.
Because the truth of a man’s life, exactly as it is today, can be painful.
Maybe his relationship is not what he says it is.
Maybe his work no longer feels fulfilling.
Maybe his finances carry more fear than he admits.
Maybe his sense of purpose has gone numb.
Maybe he is disconnected from himself, his body, his family, or the people closest to him.
And once he stops and really looks, there may be more there.
There may be grief.
There may be resentment.
There may be fear.
There may be pain he has spent years outrunning.
So instead of feeling it, he asks a more socially acceptable question:
“How do I get unstuck?”
But often what he really means is:
“How do I change my life without having to fully feel it?”
And that is where the cycle repeats.
The First Step: Claim Your Life Exactly as It Is
Before a man can truly move forward, he has to claim his life.
Exactly as it is.
Not the edited version.
Not the version he presents to other people.
Not the version he hopes it will become soon.
The real version.
His actual relationship.
His actual finances.
His actual level of purpose.
His actual state of health.
His actual family dynamics.
His actual experience of himself.
This can be one of the hardest things a man does.
Because to claim your life is not just to observe it intellectually. It is to feel it.
It is to say: this is my life right now.
This is what is working.
This is what is not.
This is where I feel alive.
This is where I feel empty.
This is where I am telling the truth.
This is where I am hiding.
That kind of honesty creates ownership.
And ownership is powerful.
But it is also painful, which is exactly why so many men avoid it.
Claiming Your Circumstances
The first layer of this is claiming the circumstances of your life.
That includes the things you have helped create and the things you did not choose.
Your marriage or relationship.
Your career.
Your money.
Your friendships.
Your family dynamics.
Your sense of mission.
Your physical health.
The pressures you are under.
The grief you are carrying.
The illness, conflict, or uncertainty that may be happening around you.
Some of these realities may be outside your control.
That does not mean they do not need to be faced.
To claim your life is not to blame yourself for everything.
It is to stop arguing with what is already true.
And when a man does that honestly, there is often pain.
Pain that his life is not what he wanted.
Pain that he has drifted.
Pain that he has betrayed himself.
Pain that things have happened he never would have chosen.
That pain has to be felt.
Not analyzed away.
Not bypassed.
Not outperformed.
Felt.
That is part of the embodied work.
Claiming Yourself
The second layer is even deeper:
A man has to claim himself.
This is difficult in a culture obsessed with self-improvement.
Most men are trained to immediately fix, optimize, upgrade, and improve themselves. So the idea of claiming yourself exactly as you are can feel almost foreign.
But there is a profound difference between growth and self-rejection.
A man who cannot claim himself will often turn every growth process into another war against who he is.
Claiming yourself means acknowledging the totality of you.
Your strength.
Your fears.
Your maturity.
Your reactivity.
Your pride in yourself.
Your joy.
Your deep pain.
The scattered pieces you left behind in the name of being competent, productive, or acceptable.
This too can be confronting. .
There may be reconciliation required.
There may be grief in seeing how long you have been fighting yourself.
There may be tenderness in finally acknowledging the scattered pieces that have been abandoned.
But when a man claims himself, something changes.
He stops leaking energy through self-denial.
He becomes more whole.
And from that wholeness, change and growth become possible.
The Second Step: Feel the Yearning for Something More
Once a man has honestly claimed his life, the next step is not immediately strategy.
It is yearning.
This is the other emotion I see men skip.
They are often quick to move into planning:
Here’s what I need to do.
Here’s the new routine.
Here’s the timeline.
Here’s the system.
Here’s the next goal.
But they have not actually allowed themselves to feel the deeper desire underneath all of it.
What do you truly want?
Not what sounds reasonable.
Not what looks good on paper.
Not what would impress people.
Not what seems efficient.
What does your heart actually long for?
A different relationship?
A more honest life?
A deeper sense of purpose?
More intimacy?
More freedom?
A different way of leading?
A more aligned form of work?
A community that actually feeds you?
A life that feels more alive?
That yearning is profound.
Because yearning is what gives direction and orientation to strategy.
Without it, a man often builds a plan that is technically smart but spiritually empty.
Why Yearning Feels So Hard for Men
Many men are more comfortable with effort than desire.
Effort feels productive.
Desire feels vulnerable.
To yearn is to admit that something in you wants more.
That something is missing.
That your current life, however functional, is not the whole story.
That your heart is still asking for something.
That can feel terrifying..
So instead of touching yearning, men default to problem-solving.
But yearning is not weakness.
It is guidance.
It is one of the deepest signals a man has.
When he learns to feel it, rather than suppress it, he gains access to a different kind of clarity.
Not just intellectual clarity.
Heart clarity. Embodied Clarity. Clarity from his depths of his being.
And that kind of clarity can actually move a life forward.
Strategy Comes After These Two Steps
This is the part many men get backward.
They ask how to get unstuck as though the first move is external.
Pick a path.
Choose a system.
Set goals.
Build a plan.
But if a man has not claimed his life and has not felt his yearning, the plan often becomes another loop.
He chooses from a menu of options.
He borrows someone else’s roadmap.
He builds a strategy disconnected from emotional truth.
And then, even if he gets temporary momentum, he often ends up stuck again.
Because the deeper issue was never addressed.
He was unwilling to do the emotional labor required to tell the truth about his life and feel the desire for something more.
So he changed tactics without changing his relationship to reality.
That is why so many men repeat the same patterns in different forms.
The Real Gateway to Change
If you want to get unstuck, start here:
Claim your life exactly as it is.
Claim yourself exactly as you are.
Feel the pain that is present.
Feel the grief, disappointment, resentment, or fear.
Then let yourself feel the yearning for something else.
That yearning might point toward a different relationship.
A different way of fathering.
A different vocation.
A different community.
A different quality of presence.
A different standard of truth.
Once those two things are alive in you, strategy becomes more powerful.
Because then your plan is not an escape from reality.
It is an expression.
It grows from truth.
It grows from desire.
It grows from the essence of you..
That is a very different way to move forward.
Final Reflection
A lot of men ask how to get unstuck when what they really want is to bypass the hard feeling work that real change requires.
But getting unstuck is not just about finding the right strategy.
It is about becoming willing to face your life exactly as it is.
To claim your circumstances.
To claim yourself.
To feel what is true.
And to let your heart tell you what it longs for next.
These are the real precursor steps.
Not because they are more comfortable.
Because they are more honest. They have more depth
And from that honesty and depth, movement becomes possible.

Not Done Yet
You don’t have to figure this out alone.
Not Done Yet is Travis’s program for men who have built a good life and know something deeper is asking for attention.
